Provider Top 5 Worry List - ICD-10 Not Included

July 13, 2011

Providers Not Preparing for ICD-10 Implementation

Recently, Part B News conducted a survey in which providers agreed that ICD-10 implementation is important, but right now it is ranked pretty low on their priority list. Only 10% of respondents have started training staff for ICD-10. One Medicare carrier conducted a webinar on what they called their "hot topics" and ICD-10 was not on that list either. With an implementation date over a year away, it is easy to see why it has taken a backseat.

Just what IS taking priority? According to these two sources, the following are ranked in order of importance (you may be nodding your head in agreement as you read):

  1. HIPAA Version 5010 (for electronic claims)
  2. Electronic Prescribing (eRx)
  3. Electronic Health Records (EHR)
  4. Medicare's PQRS (formerly PQRI) program
  5. Audits and Claim denials (this was top concern for those suffering through an audit right now!)

How can we help?

  • 5010 implementation is underway. CLICK HERE for more information on 5010 preparations.
  • Medicare is now offering more helpful information about eRx & PQRI and Claim denials. Take advantage of their free webinars and training.
    • CLICK HERE for information on a free audit webinar.
  • ICD-10 Help:
    • Review your office super-bills (encounter forms), practice management software, contracts and documentation protocols. Look for ICD-9 codes to determine which documents will need to be updated.
    • ICD-10 Conversion Tools are available for current subscribers.
      • Cross-A-Code ™:  This code mapping tool lets you look at a code and then see how this code is mapped to the new ICD-10 code.

For example, if you are viewing code 780.99, click the turquoise bar which says ICD-9 to ICD-10 Cross-A-Code and the following is displayed:

The following ICD-10 codes are generally equivalent* to this code (780.99)

          Code Description
          R68.84 Anhedonia
R68.89 Other general symptoms and signs

      • Build-A-Code ™: This fun tool lets you build codes through the heirarchy system. For example, if you go to http://www.findacode.com/tools/build-a-code.php?set=ICD10CM and then click the chapter, you will see the subcategories for that chapter. Keep clicking until the code is completed.
      • Additional ICD-10 tools will be released soon. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter for notification of these exciting additions.

  • Many companies are currently in the process of publishing training materials. Some of these training materials cover multiple disciplines and others are aimed at specific specialties. Watch for announcements and take advantage of these helpful publications.
  • Take advantage of free webinars. Some are better than others. CMS has offered some good ones lately.
