April 2013 pages 5-6 Chemodenervation of Muscles Chemodenervation, a technique in which a pharmacologic agent (eg, Botulinum toxin) is used to paralyze a muscle or group of muscles, is accomplished through the injection of this agent into the affected muscle. Chemodenervation does not destroy the nerve, because the effect of the drug is largely or completely reversible. Chemodenervation is performed to treat a variety of conditions including dystonia, spasticity, cerebral palsy, muscle spasms, spinal cord injuries, and multiple sclerosis.
