First performed in 1991, it is now widely used throughout the world because of its effectiveness and low morbidity. Like the comparable, but higher morbidity, open procedure, laparoscopic Nissen fundoplasty is accomplished by loosely wrapping and then suturing the fundus of the stomach around the entire circumference of the lower esophagus at the esophagogastric junction.
