Stedman's Medical Dictionary defines it as "an operation to remove part or all of the prepuce (the free fold of skin that covers more or less completely the glans penis)." In order to alleviate pain, newborn circumcisions are frequently preceded by a penile nerve block, which is a separately reportable service.
