September 2004 pages 8-10 Coding Communication:Bronchoscopy Bronchoscopy involves inspection of the interior of the tracheobronchial tree through an instrument called a bronchoscope (endoscope). The two types of bronchoscopy include flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy and rigid bronchoscopy. Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy is more commonly performed than the rigid bronchoscopy. It is performed under local anesthesia or conscious sedation, most often in an outpatient endoscopy center or sometimes in the operating room. Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy can also be performed on a ventilator patient in an intensive care unit (ICU).
