May 2001 pages 1-4 Percutaneous Dialysis Declotting Patients on chronic hemodialysis occasionally experience thrombus of the dialysis access, stopping or restricting blood flow in the forearm dialysis graft or fistula. This renders the access unusable to perform dialysis. Traditionally, flow through the graft access was restored through a surgical incision of the graft to allow surgical removal of the thrombus. However, advances in minimally-invasive techniques now allow the thrombus to be removed percutaneously, restoring flow in the graft, and thus avoiding open surgery.
