September 2012 pages 11-13 Procedures of the Spleen The spleen is a large, vascular lymphatic organ lying in the upper part of the abdominal cavity on the left side, between the stomach and diaphragm (see illustration below). The spleen filters old or damaged red blood cells out of the bloodstream, destroys worn-out and damaged platelets, and produces infection-fighting agents. It is composed of lymph tissue that produces antibodies (proteins that can destroy certain microorganisms), phagocytes (cells that can ingest certain microorganisms), and lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell).
