September 2005 page 8 Coding Communication:Electronic Analysis of Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs) Using Data Remotely Obtained Advances in technology now enable physicians to monitor patients with implanted cardiac devices (implantable cardioverter-defibrillators [ICDs] and cardiac pacemakers) by interrogating these devices remotely using a manufacturer's specific monitor-transmitter. The remote monitor- transmitter sends the data to a distant receiving station or secure server, allowing the physician to retrieve the data for review and analysis.
