November 2007 page 8 Coding Communication:Anesthesia Question: Are physical status modifiers reported with moderate sedation or nerve block procedures? Answer: All anesthesia services are reported by use of the anesthesia five-digit procedure code (00100-01999) with the optional addition of a physical status modifier. Physical status modifiers should not be reported for services outside the Anesthesia Services subsection (00100-01999) because these modifiers are used to distinguish various levels of complexity of the anesthesia service provided.
