June 2008 pages 3-6 Coding Communication:Hernia Repair-Hernioplasty, Herniorrhaphy, and Herniotomy The hernia repair section in the CPT Codebook includes codes that describe hernioplasty (surgical correction of a hernia), herniorrhaphy (surgical repair of a hernia), and herniotomy (surgical cutting of the constriction or strangulation of a hernia). Hernias result from the protrusion of tissue or an organ through a weakened area of tissue or abdominal muscle. Several hernia repair techniques are available for correcting this problem. A herniorrhaphy may be performed by the conventional "open" method or the "laparoscopic" method; hernioplasty may be performed using mesh, wire, or other prostheses...
