October 2008 pages 8-9 Coding Communication:Renal Pelvis Catheter Procedures Two new codes-50385 and 50386-were introduced in 2008 to report replacement and removal of internally dwelling ureteral stents via the transurethral approach without endoscopy, but typically with imaging guidance. Before the new codes were introduced, an unlisted urinary system procedure code or cystourethroscopy codes were used to code these procedures, because there were no specific codes to describe nonendoscopic transurethral approach ureteral stent exchange.
