May 2010 page 7 Coding Brief: Infant Pulmonary Function Testing In the past, infant pulmonary function tests were restricted to research laboratories. Technology now exists that will allow clinicians to replicate adult-type pulmonary function tests (PFTs) in sedated infants. The raised volume rapid thoracoabdominal compression (RVRTC) technique replicates adult-type spirometry, and, when combined with body plethysmography, allows complete fractional lung volumes to be calculated in infants. RVRTC involves the placement of an inflatable vest and a mask on the infant, after which forced expiratory flow and lung volume measurements are then obtained in the usual manner.
