April 2011 page 9 Coding Brief: Hexagonal Phospholipid Neutralization (Code 85598) Antiphospholipid antibodies are directed at phospholipid/protein complexes that have the ability to prolong the clotting times of the phospholipid-dependent coagulation tests. Antiphospholipid antibodies may be associated with systemic lupus erythematosis and are commonly referred to as lupus anticoagulants (LA). However, they can also occur in patients without lupus. These antibodies are an important cause of both arterial and deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolus, acute myocardial infarction or stroke, and may be associated with the development of recurrent abortion, intrauterine growth restriction, and preeclampsia.
