August 2011 page 11 Coding Correction On page 4 of the June 2011, CPT Assistant, the article "Reporting Observation Care–Initial, Subsequent, and Discharge Services" contained an error in the first Coding Tip in which the Subsequent Hospital Care codes 99231-99233 were referenced twice. The correct codes should be Subsequent Observation Care codes 99224-99226. Therefore, the coding tip should read: When prolonged time occurs in either the office or the inpatient areas, the appropriate add-on code should be reported. The prolonged physician service inpatient add-on code(s) 99356 and 99357 may be reported in addition to the subsequent observation codes 99224-99226...
