November 2011 page 5 Clarification: Perinatal Period Definition To align with standard international criteria as established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and adopted by the Official ICD-9-CM Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, we are providing clarification on the appropriate reporting of CPT codes that reference the perinatal period. The Official ICD-9-CM Guidelines for Coding and Reporting state, "For coding and reporting purposes, the perinatal period is defined as before birth through the 28th day following birth."
