January 1997 pages 4-6 Coding Communication Review of the New Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Codes The paranasal sinuses are air spaces lined by a mucus secreting membrane that connect to the nasal cavity through small openings. Another word for this opening is an ostium. If the ostium of the sinus becomes blocked, obstruction of mucous flow occurs resulting in stagnation and infection. This is usually associated with marked thickening of the mucous membrane lining.
