Atrial septal defect: A hole in the wall separating both atria that permits mixing of oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood (usually flows from the left atrium to the right resulting in excessive blood flow through the lungs except in the neonate where right to left flow is common) (see figs 2, 2a).
