October 2001 pages 4-7 Coding Communication Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy is commonly performed to detect a number of disorders of the GI tract. Esophagoscopy allows the examination of the esophagus. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is the examination of the esophagus, stomach, and proximal duedenum. Small intestine endoscopy, also called enteroscopy, includes examination of the distal duodenum, much of the jejunum, and sometimes the ileum. Sigmoidoscopy, proctosigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy allow the examination of the lower portion of the GI tract, including the ascending and descending colon, cecum, transverse colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum.
